BSNL planning a rural investment of Rs 530 crore

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is planning to increase its telecom infrastructure, particularly in the broadband services in West Bengal. According to the chief general manager of BSNL, Soumya Ray, they are planning to launch WiMax services at the block level by 2009. This would mean that the there would be a larger wireless broadband connectivity in the rural region as it is difficult to lay cables in such areas.
The company has tied-up with HCL Technologies for computers with in-built BSNL broadband facility, in an attempt to increase broadband penetration in West Bengal. It is also offering monthly discount on telephone bills if the bundled offer is availed.
BSNL is also depending on educational institutions to increase its penetration in rural Bengal. the company chief said that they have already rolled out 25,000 broadband subscribers, which is fairly good number.
Bengal currently has 1600 cell sites which it plans to nearly double.
