2G Scam and Moral Scarcity

The marquee of Indian growth has been the Telecom sector. While it has been the necklace of the growth of India, the 2G scam has unfortunately shown the decadence of Indian value system. Social scientists often debate on the influence of the western culture on the Indian value system, what we see today is nothing close to it. The huge flow of money has eaten the Indian political leadership with ministers such as A. Raja and Kanimozi suffering from what can easily be called moral leprosy. Surprisingly it is being catalyzed with  outbursts against seemingly harmless comments made by celebrities such as the one made by Jay Leno which showed golden temple as a vacation home. Is it the religion and commitment to the religion? If it is, then where does it disappear when the soul is traded with devil for money damning the soul for eternity? Can god help this country? Can God help my country? While God safeguards the morals of this country, it's sec...

Diwali - The significance

If New Year is about parties and resolutions, Diwali is about Gifts, crackers, sweets and... OK. Let's get above it. Diwali is about the victory over evil. But, who is evil? Gaddafi? Corrupt ministers? The spiritual gurus will tell you that it is about our inner vices and the devils of ignorance that we breed. I don't deny it, but I'll talk about something practical, which can be readily applied. Diwali is a social occasion. It is about meeting and greeting people you've lost touch with, and strengthening existing relationships. The most significant event in Hindu mythology that marks the celebration of this festival of lights is the return of Lord Ram after 14 years of Vanvas or banishment. It represents replenishing old relationships that could not be given justice due to the duties (or Dharma) one has to perform. For Lord Ram it was the Dharma of exile i.e. not disobeying his father's (King Dashratha) solemn promise. Celebrating Diwali is an event much mor...

Life is unfair

Boom! Killing trust is equal to killing people  and the vice-versa. I may be in a different mood and probably not in a very hopeful mood as I write this piece. The title probably explains it. How many times have you been good without the same sentiment being reciprocated ? How many times have you taken care a  person who was insensitive to your needs ? The answer - Probably once or twice at max. We trust only those who are sensitive to our needs. And once that is broken, it is hard to trust anybody again. But what happens when it is broken ?   Do you get angry and get back, or do you treat it as a bad dream, a nightmare and move on. The latter is the more sensible option, but then comes the head-heart conflict. Heart relates to the emotional side whereas the head to the sensible side. Heart refuses to believe that you've been hurt whereas the head wants to move on. Heart is hurt, while head says, 'carry on'. This phase can be particularly traumatic for indi...

Sai Baba, Shirdi and another India

On 3rd April I boarded the Amritsar-Dadar Express and set off for the journey to the place of Sai Baba- Shirdi . It was a last minute decision as my tickets for the return journey were through 'Tatkal' quota and could be booked only five days in advance of the journey. Tatkal is a system, which gives last minute travellers the chance to get a confirmed ticket. The journey to Manmad (one of the nearest stations near Shirdi) was not a comfortable ride as the weather was hot and my train was the dirtiest place I've ever stayed in for a day. My train as expected reached on time and I was comfortably sleeping in a hotel on the night of 4th April. The morning of 5th had a journey hangover but the day proceeded fairly smoothly with my first Darshan of Sai Baba at around 9:15 PM after the Abhishek Pooja . The number of devotees for Pooja and Darshan were fairly large because of the weekend. After the Satyanarayana Pooja at 10:30, I along with my family went to Shingnapur . Shingna...
