His eyes red, to-do list long...

They only think of work. They have work, they do it and they ultimately do it well. Wow! what a fantastic story. They do things right, but do they do the right things ??? I was having a chat with my friend outside the library taking a nap, a rather longish nap when from a dimly lit door came a guy with a face devoid of smile and focussed only on one thing. What to do next ? And guess what does he ask ? What work are you doing now and what is left ? Our answer - Boss, not thinking about work, just enjoying a chilled winter night outside library and discussing about a new business plan. I feel, to think beyond you need to think first. And you think first when you actually find time to think and speculate rather than work because somebody told you to do so. His eyes were red and from our conversation, we figured that he had a long to-do list and bla bla... He was late for his dinner and probably would have gone to work after that. Living life like a clock - Quite inhuman. You eli...

Justice Finally

It's a happy day for me since the murderers of Manjunath finally got their sentence. The surprising thing is that despite India's one of the best management institute taking up the cause, it took time with all the evidences in place. Anyways better late than never. What has to be seen is that there should be a mechanism by the law protectors to help those cases where backing is not possible. Below is a copy of the email from MST. Greetings from The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust! The Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court today announced the judgment on Manjunath’s case. The important details of the judgment are as follows: 1. Upholding the judgment of lower (Sessions) court, the High Court has found all 6 main accused in the case to be guilty of the crime and have awarded them life imprisonment. 2. 2 convicts have been acquitted on the grounds of “benefit-of-doubt”. 3. Death sentence of main accused in the case - Pawan Kumar (alias Monu Mittal) - has been converted to life ...

AIDS awareness campaign at INDEX 09

This is a continuation of my previous post . INDEX 09 was spread over two days and so was our campaign. We had designed 3 games initially to draw attention of people to our stall. Games included a dart game, basketball game and a kids golf game. The initial effect of these games was that they attracted a lot of children, who were not part of our target group. Our aim was to spread awareness to people above 17 years of age. Initially things did not go according to plan and I must tell you that we had a tough time dealing with kids. They wanted to try the game not once or twice but till the time their appetite for prizes could be fulfilled. We were distributing Maggi as prizes and fulfilling the wishes of those kids meant running out of stock before reaching our target group. The Game : Every AIDS awareness question answered correctly would either fetch you a chance to play another game or would get you a prize in case you've won the game. Our aim was to ask all questions during t...

AIDS awareness - Beyond posters

Marketing of ideas often requires persuasion, but when we are targeting a mass audience, we need to follow a model similar to that of an FMCG company. Awareness of the idea would be followed by trial, which would be succeeded by repeat purchase of the idea and then we'd need to look into depth of repeat purchase. AIDS can plague a nation, its happiness and growth and so the problem needs to be addressed in a systematic manner. The first stage i.e. Awareness is the most important stage. Not all those who are aware would try. So it is more important to make people aware. And awareness is not about giving "Gyan". Why would somebody come to me to learn more about AIDS if I am just preaching. I am not preaching, I am marketing. Marketing what ? An idea, that can help your life, the society and the nation. So at IIM Lucknow, we have collaborated with Uttar Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (UPSACS) to spread awareness of the disease. We'll be doing this at the INDEX 200...

Child Labor in India

This was my team's entry in Prayaas 2009, a case study competition on child labor by Bhavishya. Bhavishya represents the united voice of the students of IIM Lucknow against the strains in our social fabric. Bhavishya is active in the domains of education, unemployment and health and women empowerment. It leverages the technical and managerial competency of students and the faculty to aid NGOs and the government. The other two musketeers studying the case along with me were Joshin and Mayank. Although we did not win the competition, I'd like to share the three cases we studied. Below are the cases along with our suggestions Case 1 – Mohit – aged 12 – sells ice cream. We met Mohit at Kapoorthala, Lucknow. He was selling ice-cream. To break the ice, and to get to conversation mode, we approached him and bought an ice cream. Conversing with him we got to know his story. Facts about Mohit: • He is 12 years old. • Lives near Aliganj, Thana. • Has never gone to school, although he des...
