S atya Nadella's story as Microsoft's CEO is a story of perseverance and belief. Nelson Mandela was not Big Data

You heard it right! Nelson Mandela managed to successfully campaign against apartheid not because he was equipped with Big Data . He simply told a strong and powerful story.

Everybody wants to feel "SPECIAL"

The only thing we lack today in our life is our time. Without this time and a plenty of things in mind, life gets tough on relationships. These bonds weaken over time. Even with colleagues our general likability goes down adversely impacting our professional growth. What can we do to change it? We always like those people who listen to our stories, appreciate our work, or laugh at our jokes. These are the people who tell us that our story, work or joke is special. In a way they make us feel special by covertly  caring about us. In on line, everyone, the attention seeker or the introvert wants to feel special. The big people, and even the small ones, all want it. Getting it makes the world slightly more happy. The following video from the movie "Munnabhai MBBS" is a perfect demonstration of the positive effect. We live in a social world where our success not only depends on our performance but that of our team. For a team to be successful every perso...

All good ideas sell one thing

A fairness cream gives you the hope that you'll look better.  An eco-friendly car gives you the hope that earth can be better. A luxury hotel gives you the hope that you'll live lavishly. A great leader gives you the hope that life can be better.  All good ideas sell one thing and that is hope. A conviction to create a mechanism to give hope to people leads to innovation.

Strategic Humility

“Humility is like underwear, essential, but indecent if it shows”~ Helen Nielsen. Although I think of Humility as a rich over coat. It should be worn over you. It gives you respect in the eyes of your opponent or competition. Inward aggression should be concealed as it is a driver. A competent person can only afford to be arrogant. A loser cannot be arrogant. But what happens when you are loosing the race and still want to keep a graceful edge over your competition. You simply wear the over coat of humility. It is not an underwear and indecent in no way.

Are you the Estaré Allí type?

EstarĂ© AllĂ is a Spanish word that means " I'll be there ". An EstarĂ© AllĂ person is dependable and can be called upon when needed. People who rise to achieve greatness in society are the EstarĂ© AllĂ type. Even success in domestic life needs you to be the EstarĂ© AllĂ type person. It essentially gives you respect, which comes from trust. Those we remember in our life are the ones that we could count on in times of need and otherwise. They belong to the EstarĂ© AllĂ class.

Barack Obama: Leader loosing the human touch?

Wall street journal's Peggy Noonan made a big statement about the messiah of hope . It is that nobody loves Obama. This is amazing because every president has people who love him, who feel deep personal affection or connection, who have a stubborn, even beautiful refusal to let what they know are just criticisms affect their feelings of regard. At the height of Bill Clinton's troubles there were always people who'd say, "Look, I love the guy." They'd often be smiling—a wry smile, a shrugging smile. Nobody smiles when they talk about Mr. Obama. There were people who loved George W. Bush when he was at his most unpopular, and they meant it and would say it. But people aren't that way about Mr. Obama. He has supporters and bundlers and contributors, he has voters, he may win. But his support is grim support. And surely this has implications. Although I really doubt the concreteness of this claim it has a lesson for leaders. The human touch, the fact tha...

Passion - An Entrepreneur's dilemma

My friend started his own business of building online portals and platforms for SMEs. His enthusiasm and passion for business drives him to cut his sleeping time, eating time and most importantly party time. Although in all respects I can assure you that for him, work is like a party. It probably gives him a bigger high. I’ve seen him work on a startup since our third year of our graduation and ever since despite many hiccups his go getter spirit is still on and he is fighting it out. But… What happens when you meet another fighter ? A similar person who has been fighting it out for so many years and has seen the same ups and downs, gets a similar kick and is equally competent, if not more… And suddenly you see an army of such people who are competing, with equal passion, but … driven by different values.

How to be a successful manager - Developing the art

Developing an art needs more attention than skill building. Skills are things we all learn and after a certain point of time we need to master. In the job market, when it comes to skills, many are mediocre, some are good and the rest (i.e. the best) are artists. Art is something unique to an individual and if this art is beneficial for a company, it makes the company dependent on the individual.

What makes a leader ?

A person from the defence forces is clearly distinguishable in a crowd. We normally attribute it to the rigourous training that these people go through before being ready for combat. It may be partially true, but it is not completely true. The reason is a loss of idenity. It may seem intriguing but, yes its the loss of identity at an early age that shapes up the intangible parts of self, such as the personality that distinguish them from the other civilians. The concept of extended self says that our attachments, i.e. our physical possessions become a part of ourselves. They start from our body parts to closer things such as hair styles, tattoos and move on to cars we own, the people we move around with to the institutes we join to the company we work for. A deep attachment with a possession makes such a possession a part of our-self. As people join defence, all this is stripped off and they are all the same. In a bid to be distinct and differentiate themselves, other facets of their p...
