Smoking Sting operation

Campaigning could be the worst or probably the best show of mud slinging and Lok Sabha polls are bringing out the seasoned and the new kids on the bloc on the big stage. Smoking has been officially banned at all public places in New Delhi and a BJP councilor didn't hesitate in doing a quick smoking sting operation. Former Delhi mayor and Congress councillor Farhad Suri was on Thursday caught flouting his government’s stringent steps to ban smoking in public places, when a BJP councillor Rekha Gupta caught him smoking in the Town Hall. Gupta caught Suri smoking outside the MCD House meeting hall and complained to mayor Arti Mehra. “Smoking in public places is not allowed and being a councillor he should set an example for the people and not indulge in breaking laws. We want that an enquiry be initiated against him and he should be fined as per law,” said Gupta. - Hindustan Times

Orchestrated drama ?

The Lok Sabha polls are around the corner and the BJP camp has begun aggressive campaigning to woo the voters. At such a time out of no where comes a fanatical organization and thrashes up innocent people in Mangalore creating a national outcry and rage. In the name of Lord Ram, a group associated to BJP went ahead as the moral police and bashed up people partying in a pub in broad daylight. BJP goes ahead and disowns the sena. Now the swiftness through which the job has been done makes me feel that something is not as white-Black in the BJP camp. Was this drama orchestrated to show a non-fanatic side of BJP or was this a move gone horribly wrong. Starting early can have its positives and the negatives and with BJP in spotlight over this issue can make it a champion or immature move. Looking at the downside it might strengthen nations view of a fanatic-nationalistic-violent party and as seen in the assembly elections incumbency and development might again be the high tide in an already...

Get well soon

This pic on the HT website caught my attention today. It is the most unconventional way of saying Get Well Soon I've seen recently. Our unflagging PM needed medical attention and although his role as PM seems quite abstract apart from the ancillary 'V' he shows to the arrayed photographers, I hope he gets well soon for a busy season ahead.

Is Mint in trouble ?

Is HT Mint in trouble ? Firstly it was the pressure on news media by recession, which resulted in some ambitious projects being halted. What followed was a controversy caused by an article " letter to PM " published in mint, that resulted in the expulsion of Raju Narisetti as the editor in chief. The latest blow comes from Vir Sanghvi, who criticizes HT Mint of being hypocrites. He writes in his blog So why am I stopping the column? It's quite simple. I will not write for a publication that censors its columnists and denies them the right to free speech while writing long, impassioned pieces about the freedom to criticize others from the Prime Minister downwards. All of us exhibit double standards to some degree. But Mint's hypocrisy takes my breath away. Read Meanwhile Monika Halan , the former editor of outlook money resigned because of the intrusion of management into the edit section and her unhappiness over the awards. Looking at the disappointment of many jour...

Sleep another day

You might "Die another day" if the pilots don't sleep today. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has issued guidlines that the crew must chat with pilots every 30 minutes to keep them awake. WTF! This warning has come after a few domestic airlines deviated from the flight path and some crossed their destinations because of sleeping pilots. Imagine that during a flight from Bengaluru to Amritsar, the pilot falls asleep and the plane reaches Pakistan. That could have caused an international embarrassment for India, triggered a nuclear war or even could have caused the shooting down of the plane. Better the airlines keep a check and recruit more pilots, else another can of worms might open up like that of Mr Ramalinga Raju. If they don't mend ways an aviation disaster could be in the making.

Slumdog is on the Oscar list

The top categories of Oscars have got two Slumdog Millionaire nominations , one for best picture and the other for best director, making it a special achievement in terms of Indian Achievement in Oscars. The fact that A R Rahman is nominated in 3 categories out of 10 Slumdog Millionaire nominations makes it even more special. We've had a lot of talk about the Oscars after Lagaan managed to make the cut to the nomination stage for the best foreign film category. Apart from that the more recent quarrel between "Munnbhai-Gandhigiri" and Rang De Basanti over which goes to the oscars made the academy awards an even more talked about event. Bollywood and Oscars share the same relation, which Tollywood or Bhojpuri cinema shares with Bollywood. A lot of wannabes and a little bit of genuine talent gets added, but keeps the whole equation more or less similar. A billion plus population but so less on talent that we need foreigners to hold our fingers to take up to the big stage in...

Dr Manmohan Singh and his license

Getting license in Delhi means bribing the officers, going not once but many times to the RTO and trying your luck. I was lucky to have got it done the first time, but many of my family members just happened to go on an off day. Dr Manmohan Singh did the right decision by going to the RTO on sunday. He saved the income in form of bribes of many corrupt officers. Hindu reports The Prime Minister had gone to the RTO at Indraprastha in central Delhi to renew his driving license that had expired 45 days ago but he made one concession to security by choosing a Sunday to go there along with his wife Gursharan Kaur, who also renewed her license. Another good thing is that he saved the time loss caused due to his cavalcade on a regular day. Maybe some politicians can learn from him.

I am not happy

With the recent string of killings of Indians in US, despite all the hue and cry about Barack Obama and the celebration of the bygone racist era, I still think racist abuse is behind the murders of Indians in US. HT reports The body of Akshay Vishal, an employee of fraud-hit Satyam Computer Services Limited who was on contract with US company Jet Falcon, has been sent for autopsy. His company has also undertaken to send the body back to India. The 26-year-old engineer was allegedly shot by some unidentified gunmen on Tuesday while he was getting into a car. Profusely bleeding, he was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Vishal is the seventh person from Andhra Pradesh to be killed in the US since December 2007. Is US safe for Indians, especially students ?

Satyam : The story so far

Success @ satyam took a new definition in 2009. I am perplexed about the reason due to which the fraud was committed by Ramalinga Raju. Lets track its growth story. 1987 - Incorporated as private limited company 1991- Offshore software project with John Deere & Co.— Satyam’s first Fortune 500 customer—announced - Recognized as a public limited company; debuts on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) - IPO oversubscribed by 17 times 1993- Awarded ISO 9001 Certification 1999- Assessed at SEI CMM® Level 5 - Satyam Infoway (Sify) becomes the first Indian Internet company listed on NASDAQ - Presence established in 30 countries 2000- Associate count reaches 10,000 - Satyam receives National HRD Award from Indian government - Dataquest names Ramalinga Raju "IT Man of the Year" 2001- Satyam becomes world’s first ISO 9001:2000 company to be certified by BVQI - Listed on the NYSE (SAY) 2002- Satyam BPO launched in Hyderabad 2005- Largest gl...

Offensive Harry

The recent blooper from a hysteric world comes from none other than Prince Harry. Sometimes the dead and buried stories creep up from nowhere and cause embarrassment. All I can say is that the hard drives containing archives are really of a very good quality. boston.com reports Harry, who is an army lieutenant in the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals, is purported to have made the remarks in 2006 in an airport departure lounge as soldiers waited to travel to Cyprus for training exercises. The newspaper said in a statement that in the video, Harry referred to one colleague as "our little paki friend" -- using a derogatory term for people of Pakistani origin. It reported that he called another cadet -- who was wearing a headscarf -- a "raghead." The newspaper said that the video was filmed by other cadets and supplied to the newspaper.

How to be rich ?

Get rich quick or die trying. Many try to follow this tag, one of them being Mr Ramalinga Raju. I would not suggest you to go on those lines but you can try out this website by Ramit . It's description reads " I Will Teach You To Be Rich Scholarship for Social Innovation " Social Innovation not exploitation!

Satyamites criticize Infosys

There have been varying reactions by different sects after R Raju confessed his fraud. I remember when Satyam had come to visit my campus they had asked for Rs 2 lakh as security bond. Fortunately most of my batch mates did not join, else they might have lost the money. Amongst all the companies that came to my college, CSC and Infosys were preferred by most students. As freshers initially we have a tendency to just get a job, but looking at the current scenario I think all job seekers need to be aware of the company they join. One of my friends who unfortunately joined the group of 53K satyamites feels humiliated to be a part of the company. But there have been others who have criticized other IT firms who have stopped themselves from hiring people from the tainted company. One such letter in the ET says Hello Mr Mohandas Pai, Don't degrade Satyam associates to such an extent...Though there are things which have very seriously gone wrong at the higher management level we Satyamit...

Gilani criticizes Indian intel

Cacophony of a failed state ! Pakistan's PM Yousuf Raza Gilani now comes with another statement blaming the Indian intelligence for Mumbai terror. IBN live reports Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said 26/11 was India's intelligence failure and blames the international community of playing favourites. I wonder what the leader wants to suggest. Maybe he is making such statements to strengthen his foothold in the party.

Ajay Devgan fined for smoking

Langda Tyagi is next. Paying Rs 200 for smoking in public fails to deter 100% - (exceptions) in public. For most of them Rs 200 is nothing, but yes an additional expense. I talked to a person who knows people responsible for fining. They have daily targets like sales targets and they achieve it easily. I also heard that state governments had deliberately told not to fine smokers till elections (That is what a paan waala told me). For Ajay and company paying Rs 200 is another way of making news. Maybe some publicity stunt for a new movie.

Unofficial Satyam Associates

A blog Say Satyam has come up with a description, which reads " Yes, we know you read the newspapers. Now read us. " I was hooked on to NDTV after the news of the arrest of Ramalinga Raju broke in. Checking all the speculation being done on television about the imprisonment of Ramlinga Raju and his associates there is a reasonable evidence from the Ramalinga's letter to believe our media this time. The government has dissolved the board of directors of satyam and will form a 10 member independent board. The whole issue does not seem to be a black and white case even after Raju's letter. It is reasonable to believe considering the political clout of Ramalinga Raju that the reality could be murkier. The contradicting thing is that section 120B,409,420,468,471 of the Indian penal code have been imposed on Mr R Raju. The constitution of the 10 member "reputed" board according to PC Gupta (Min of corp affairs) could reveal more. Related Satyam Scam Ramalinga Raj...

Scouting for petrol

The trucker's strike has created a lot of mess in Delhi. Today I was on my way to work at around 2:00 to same place in CP where I had suffered a parking problem a few days back. I was prepared to meet the same set of people and had left early in their anticipation. But today came another rude shock. My buggy was low on fuel and I thought of getting its tank filled up on my way. The first petrol pump had a barricaded entrance. Well Ok! There might be some problem. But on seeing the same barricades outside the second one, I began to realize the implications of the ganged up truckers. Now the thought of being stranded with a decade old buggy with no fuel crossed my mind. Even if I reach, how will I come back ? As these doubts came to my mind I encountered a traffic jam at a point where it was least expected. As I took my patient breaths to reduce the panic, I found the oasis of oil where people had jammed up; A petrol pump with petrol. Having no option I too joined the train of bug...

Security Advice

Twitter Security Meltdown It has been recently reported that twitter has been plagued by wide spread phishing attacks. The security failure has resulted in the temporary takeover of Twitter accounts associated with Facebook, Fox News, The Huffington Post, Barack Obama, Britney Spears, and CNN's Rick Sanchez. This is an advice to all my readers to temporarily not check the twitter account of speak india, i.e. http://twitter.com/speakindia , since you could be vulnerable to a phishing attack. As of now, the twitter account is working fine but it is advisable to stay away from it until twitter takes measures to correct the security fault. I will inform you when it is safe to check twitter again. Hoping for a safe web browsing experience.

Ramalinga Raju's letter

Ramalinga Raju the ex-chairman of Satyam after having confessed of fraud will need divine intervention to save himself. The last ditch attempt to acquire Maytas to fill in the fictitious assets with real ones has gone horribly wrong. He has precisely summed up his situation in his letter by writing " It was like riding a tiger, not knowing how to get off without being eaten ".

Parking misery

Today had another frustrating hour, one of those endless ones I spend here in Delhi. I happened to go to CP (a crowded place in Delhi) for some official work with an appointment at 3 PM. In punctuality I wouldn't be the person to look up to but I managed to reach the place at 2:50, 10 minutes well in advance in my 1999 Maruti buggy. But those minutes of advance planning proved to be too little on a road of babus and baboons. I genuinely feel most people in Delhi lack general traffic sense and making the road as their private property gives them a big ego boost. One such person was driving a zen in front of my buggy who simply left his car in the middle of the road, already narrowed by the miles of cars parked alongside, like garbage littered near the dumps. He stopped his car in the middle, gave the keys to one of his chamchas who again took his time in taking the car out of the way. Meanwhile a long line of unwanted people like me were honking and getting frustrated. To add to my w...

India Pakistan friendship

Is India-Pakistan friendship possible ? Or is that we've proven out to be a much smarter race to mingle or reconcile with those who left us 61 years back. Maybe this picture explains our eerie reaction reaction to such a friendship. The difference is that the innocent boy is not being repulsive to the truth of a dirty pig. This is one instance where intelligence builds barriers than breaking them, where it changes perceptions than blurring them. I apologize for putting the picture below, but let me make my thoughts clearer. The boy in this picture is Pakistan and the pig is terrorism.

Last warning !!!

When this billboard (or similar) gets put up in your city(I hope not), it is time you collect your cash, sell your property and run away as fast as possible. Unfortunately this has been the story for many cities countries like Iraq, Afghanistan and now Gaza. Recently Israel has been attacking the Gaza strip killing scores of people, taking revenge for the bloodshed caused by Hamas in Israel as a result of prolonged terror attacks. I've been a strong proponent of these attacks but now I feel I am mistaken. India's situation is somewhat similar, the only difference is that our reaction is an indicator of the noises created by empty vessels. But I care a damn of who makes the right noises and who speaks the better English or Urdu. I want to live peacefully. I want Pakistanis to live and live happily in their own country and let me live in mine. If another Israel-Gaza happens between India and Pakistan ( the nuclear touch ), nobody will ever live in peace. So friends, lets have f...

Bongress

I was discussing this with a friend of mine today and fortunately, in my online world I came across this wonderful image of the cross breed of Lion and Tiger called Liger. (This is the largest Ligress in the world) With this idea, what if we crossbreed our political parties say BJP + Congress ? Bongress Bongress might just come up with a bang. The cooperate to Dominate (c2d) strategy! If they don't somebody else might just eat the pie.

Nuclear solution ?

Is this a solution to the current terror crisis ? At the end of it, a US report says there could be a nuclear war between India and Pakistan. But do we want it ? My answer no. And nobody wants it. At the times of Chernobyl tragedy the radiation levels were high in Europe. It is sheer foolish destruction of humanity.

Fireman Kalam

He (Missile Man) gave India the firepower to use the power hidden in an atom to be unleashed over any other country creating destruction on an unimaginable scale. He gave India, the much needed fire to intimidate hostile/rogue nations. Now he speaks about his opinion on the possible Indian strategy on dismantling terror outfits with TOI . [...]Firstly, a vigorous national campaign, involving every citizen, should be launched to tackle the terror menace, he said interacting with students here. Secondly, Kalam advocated carrying out raids to destroy terror hideouts both inside and outside the country. "Terror can be eliminated by raiding and smashing militant hideouts both inside and outside the country," he said. Lastly, there was need for speedy trial of cases relating to terrorism to punish perpetrators of such crimes, he said.[...] He surely can teach a lesson to our communal politicians who talk about mandir and masjid. I'd like to quote Shobhaa De's statement ...

Where is Britney ?

Another Jabber Britney Spears, the girl I had a crush on as a teen is in the Indian news media for being omnipresent. But hey where is she ? And what do you expect for an answer. Maybe she is dating another side dancer, or may be her school friend or maybe ... could be anybody... A playboy from pakistan... Lots of speculations Hmm... But the lamest of all answers was that she was recently in India (when actually she was not). When an international celebrity goes missing, where could he/she be ? On a religious trip for mental peace to India. The Indian media makes a big deal when a Hollywood star or a pop star comes to India. whats so big in that ? Can't they come without all the hype. Some written off celeb comes to India and the media swarms him as if George Bush has arrived. Will they bless us all by coming to India ? Some hangovers seem to stay forever with a few journalists hoping to make a name by cooking birbal ki khichardi with extra salt. Ok! lets move ahead with another m...

Indo-Pak nuclear war: How it could begin

The US intelligence agency had predicted way back in 1998 of a nuclear war that could take place between India and Pakistan, because of Pak army supported insurgency in Kashmir. At that time conditions were different. Today the conditions are more-less same as what the US think tank had suggested as a possible outcome in a report published by DNA . Pakistan is still defiant on handing over the terrorists. The reasons being their power galore in Pakistan. It is known(in Pakistan) that the dreaded terrorist Maulana Masood Azhar is behind Benazir Bhutto's assassination. But despite all this knowledge there is little control of Pak president Asif Ali Zardari on Pakistan and hence he has to abet terror else risk his and his son's life.At the same time there is a pressure mound building up over the UPA government and Lok Sabha elections of 2009 are nearing. A possible consequence: UPA government orders deployment of special small forces on border. Pakistani insurgents attack Indian ...

US government does a U-turn

The US government has done a U turn on the extradition of the terror suspects, Dawood Ibrahim, Maulana Masood Azhar and Zakiur Rehman lakhvi. The United States has said that the terror suspects should be tried in Pakistan rather than India. This makes it a complete U-turn from the earlier proposal to extradite these criminals of humanity. The US interests of the war against Taliban on the north western frontier of Pakistan are clearly the main reason. It is strange that Indian government still is sitting like a duck waiting to be pounded over by the terrorists. Our government's cries are getting lamer by the day and I feel my self respect being hurt like that of every other Indian. My blood burns when I see our esteemed politicians doing nothing but pressurizing pakistan with a set of confusing and misleading words. The occasional tough look on Pranab Mukherejee's face or the grin laden Mr P olitically C orrect (P Chidambaram) does not give any sense of a crisis situation. Atl...

NIA comes into effect

NIA has come into effect from today. WoW! what a beginning to 2009. When, I look back at the swiftness of the pass of the bill, it seems like a corporate management has taken over the Indian democracy. The National Investigation Agency got the assent of the president, Shmt Pratibha Patil. I don't think there would have been much of problem there. Our presidents are mere puppets. What matters for India is in the hands of MPs with criminal records who have the votes. I can go on barraging my words filled with disgust on politicians, but lets be positive on the first day. The home minister, P Chidambaram and president Mrs Patil have also given a go ahead to the UAPA ( Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill), which includes some rather strong anti-terror preventions bill. More over, the vacancies in the Intelligence Bureau are also being filled up on a priority basis. The home minister has also said that they'll be procuring 20,000 bullet proof jackets for police. On the f...

Dhoni : Z+ security ?

Does Dhoni need a Z+ security ? My answer :  Yes, he needs security. He is indispensable. Here is what orkutistaan has to say Mythili : Does Dhoni need Z+ security? Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is unhappy with his Z security and it has been upgraded to Z+ security by the jharkhand govt. but does he really require it? JIGSTHAKUR : In India public need z+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ security [ very true ] * Z+ category has a security cover of 36 personnel. * Z category has has a security cover of 22 personnel. * Y category has a security cover of 11 personnel. * X category has a security cover of 2 personnel. sLuMdOg : This is a nice way to waste so much of our army men for just 1 man's security...huh....
