Attack on Pakistan on the cards

It may not be long before the notorious MIGs may take off from bases in North India and bomb Lashkar hideouts and camps in Pakistan as the international squeeze on Pakistan is getting tighter, tight enough to suffocate the terrorist camps. What makes this evident are the international reactions more so from the United States nad Israel. I'd like to quote a few lines from the Times of India. ‘‘Rather than simply begging the Indians to show restraint, a better option could be to internationalize the response. Have the international community declare that parts of Pakistan have become ungovernable and a menace to international security,’’ Robert Kagan, an influential analyst with the Carnegie Endowment, said. ‘‘Would such an action (strikes) violate Pakistan’s sovereignty?’’ Kagan asked in an op-ed, and answered, “Yes, but nations should not be able to claim sovereign rights when they cannot control territory from which terrorist attacks are launched.’’ US sets stage for strikes on c...

Youth wins over experience

Experienced campaigner John McCain lost to the young and enigmatic Barack Hussein Obama in one of the history's most famous US presidential elections. This is more a victory of change, the change that Barack Obama stood for. Although it was said that Obama being less experienced would not be efficient in handling the White House, has come out with flying colours. First, it was the Barack-Hillary campaign and then the McCain-Obama campaign. Now that he has won, his crown of thorns will be handed over to him on Jannuary 20th 2009. It will be interesting to see Barack Obama's policies in a time of economic crisis, to ending war in Iraq and trying to upkeep the US health care system.

India, china : Reshaping the world

It has been said by many economists, visionary and this word is echoing through every corridor of India. "India and China will reshape the world". To be precise they'll(we) be world leaders. To join the league of those predicting this outcome is Rupert Murdoch. Rupert Murdoch, is an Australian-American global media mogul. He was recently quoted by the times of India as Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch says the ongoing metamorphosis of China and India from historic backwaters into economic powers will reshape the world in the next few decades. I am more concerned about India.I see his statement as both encouraging and discouraging. Some more words of praise for us and a reality check for us too. This can found when he says in the same article China and India are great countries whose people are only recently emerging from long histories of being "incarcerated by communism or caste." " Incarcerated by caste " . I've deliberately highlighted this phrase. ...

Anatomy of the financial crisis

Anatomy of the financial crisis - Views - livemint.com This is a very well written article that shows how some key policy decisions taken around 3 decades ago in the US have lead to the current financial crisis. The first was to deregulate the fixed commissions for stock trading in the 1970s and the second was of eliminating Glass-Steagall restrictions on mixig commercial and investment banking. A fixed commission meant that the investment banks made a comfortable living. deregulating of commission meant greater competition and thinner margins. The latter led to eating up of investment bank's share by commercial banks. Another key factor was the policies that gave rise to global imbalance. The federal reserve cut interest rase in response to the 2001 recession.

Pakistan troops open fire again

The Centre has reacted strongly to the ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the Line of Control today. “Ceasefire violations by Pakistan are unacceptable,” said Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma. “We’ve conveyed our concerns to Pakistan,” he added. Earlier in the day Pakistani troops targetted Nowshera sector in Jammu and Kashmir and fired six mortar shells. Pakistani forces resorted to intermittent firing of mortar shells in Jhangarh area of Nowshera sector in Rajouri district for 45 minutes from 0640 hours, defence spokesman Lt. Col S D Goswami said. Indian troops exercised restraint and did not retaliate, he said, adding there was no loss of life or damage to property in the shelling. The questions in my mind are Why are we not counter attacking them ? Shouldn't we attack when they fire shells at us ? Till what time will this continue ?

Nuclear deal is bound by the 123 agreement

WASHINGTON: The US has reiterated that the civilian nuclear initiative with India is bound by the 123 agreement and not the Hyde Act. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Richard Boucher rejected the notion that he has somehow dodged the issue in the past. "No, I didn't," Boucher said in response to a query. "We don't see any inconsistency between the Hyde Act and the 123 agreement. The requirements of US law are on us to meet. The essential function of the Act is to to enable a nuclear deal with India, because otherwise under American law we were prohibited from doing anything with India," the senior State Department official said.
