Next set of millionaires

Who dares wins! But this is not about daring, it is a sure shot formula for success. If IT dominated the last two decades, its going to be green energy the next five ones. And I can say that since there would be a need for it and if you invest early in Green energy, their stocks are going to soar in future. The demand for Green energy will build up slowly and steadily. China, like a cunning fox has slowly gained advantage and is currently leading the race. 20th century belonged to United States. 21st century will belong to the curry with the ingredients of Green and Peace. Now the question is that can we make it ?

Ahmedabad and Innovation

Ahmedabad - Synonym: Innovation. If Amazon e-book reader has a competitor it has come from an Ahmedabad based entrepreneur Vishal Mehta (Engineer from Cornell, MBA from MIT-Sloan, but spirit of Ahmedabad). Without making this post long and repetitive, I'll get straight to the point. No winder IIM A is the best IIM in country. The spirit of Ahmedabad needs to be cultivated in every city, especially those looking to grow. Lucknow and its distinguished leaders can learn a lesson or two. A city is not by its artifacts or statues (of excellent pasts and glorious presents, rather not so glorious), but it is by its innovation. Vishal has made Ahmedabad, and in turn India proud.

Attacks on Indians in Australia - Nature does not change

Another Indian attacked in Australia. The news still remains same and an innocent Indian has been brutally beaten up. This reminds me of the Scorpion-Frog story   The story is about a scorpion asking a frog to carry him across a river. The frog is afraid of being stung, but the scorpion reassures him that if it stung the frog, the frog would sink and the scorpion would drown as well. The frog then agrees; nevertheless, in mid-river, the scorpion stings him, dooming the two of them. When asked why, the scorpion explains, "I'm a scorpion; it's my nature." Nature does not change. And well such attacks are doing no good for Australia. Although I have a feeling that if left unchecked, another rebel group could well be in the making in Australia. Thats the last thing we want.

Change - A perfect goodbye

Selling an organization he helped built is the hardest decision for any entrepreneur. But goodbyes can be made pleasant and that is what SUN's co-founder Scott McNealy has done. There are some lines I liked from the letter written by Scott to SUN's employees I read at All Things Digital . Gang, When I interviewed many of you for employment at Sun over the years, one commitment often made was that things will change above, below, and around you faster than any place you have ever been.First and foremost, Sun innovated like crazy. Thanks to all of you inventors and risk takers who changed how we live. Sun did not cheat, lie, or break the rule of law or decency.Sun employees had way more fun than any other company.here are good companies out there. Special thanks to all of my employees for this. I never had to hide the newspaper in shame from my children. Many employees started families, bought homes and put them through school while working at Sun. Our revenues over 28 years exc...

Haiti needs help

If you give a helping hand to someone in need, he'll remember you for the rest of the life and you cannot match his blessings with any divine power. Haiti needs you, and me telling you to "go help them" (of course in whatever capacity you can) will do not as much good as your inner desire to really help them. Just have a look at the devastation. Generations lost, dreams shattered of people like you and me. If you feel like helping, and I know you will because you are a good soul, International Medical Corps (IMC) has provided a platform for you. About IMC International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization, founded by volunteer doctors and nurses and dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through relief and development programs. Our emergency response team is in Haiti responding in force. There are still thousands of patients seeking treatment of which approximately 80% are in need of surgery and are running out of time - especia...

Democracy on web works. How about communism ?

Google could not have operated in china without having filtered its search. I cannot imagine India and me today without Google. Guess what would have happened if we were a communist country. Google, in or out of china is a matter of following a great philosophy . Without me being politically incorrect, many points in Google's ten point philosophy point towards a clear direction. Some of them are Point 4. Democracy on the web works. Point 6 You can make money without doing evil. And finally Point 10 Great just isn't good enough. The rest is up to you to think.

Attracting the female buyer

Finding the perfect rich female is an old movie plot we are quite familiar with. How can a today's marketer make his products sell to a female customer ? The answer is simple- By being ROMANTIC. Writing the answer or implementing a strategy although is not that easy. A romantic communication can be a good way to attract female customers. lexi has given a romantic turnover to a plain communication in her post (' Romance 101:How to use feminine words that sell ), Plain: “Solve Email Problems” Heroic: “Battle Your Email Overload” Romantic: “Love Your Email Inbox Again” The difference is that a romantic version would appeal more to a female than a plain or heroic version. As Tagore pointed out , 'We realize this truth intuitively(that everyday world has the subtle and un-obstrusive beauty of the commonplace.) through our power of love; and women, through this power, discover that the object of their love and sympathy, in spite of its ragged disguise of triviality...

Do you want to be a part of change ?

We find ourselves at some point in time sitting in front of a hysterical media criticizing government, police, education system... But what do we do ? A common answer that comes out of these discussions and criticisms is that we don't have the resources to change the current way. And we are correct in thinking that way since our work, studies and leisure give us little time to think about how we can tackle the larger issues. In order to find resources, we need to step out of our life, our work, our computers. But, you know what, here is one fantastic platform that can help us be a part of change. A reader of my blog who happens to be a Jaago Re movement representative informed me about the new drive against corruption. Here is a brief about the recent developments in the Jaago Re movement. Recently, Tata Tea has re-launched its flagship website www.jaagore.com . Jaago Re as a campaign has targeted the youth of the nation, urging them to take a stand on various issues such as vot...

The best way to celebrate

The best way is to give a call. It makes it personal without the baggage of visiting them in the choking traffic. SMS destroys the personal aspect of festival and celebration. I did not celebrate Lohri , but this was one of my most fulfilling celebration till date since I called up my family and friends and they were overjoyed. More so since they weren't expecting it. Although visiting and celebrating with them would have meant a lot more, a call did make up. Now thats what I call consumer Delight (within budgets). I feel Consumer delight in personal relationships goes a long way in strengthening bonds and build long lasting value adding relationships. Below is what India was searching most on Lohri and Pongal (Coutesy: Google trends). Better give a call than search the web for the best sms or scrap. And now its damn cheap. Just 1 paisa a second.

Public accountability on the rise

Two recent examples of increasing public accountability are signs of India moving forward. First is the high court decision (second time in four months) that chief justice of India be covered in RTI act and second is the resignation of MTNL chief R.S.P Sinha over declining revenues and market share of MTNL. This is a sign that tomorrow our leaders would be (and should be) accountable for larger issues. The high court ruling states that "The higher the judge is placed in the judicial hierarchy, the greater the standard of accountability and the stricter the scrutiny of accountability of such mechanism..." Although in MTNL's case, wired telephony over all is on the decline and MTNL should have stepped out of simply wired telephony and related areas to remain competitive. MTNL's service has greatly improved recently but the wired telephony is in the decline phase of its lifecycle .

Online coaching in India

These days many websites are giving expert advice and connecting people with similar needs. Career counseling is one such service. Big exams such as CAT,GRE,IIT JEE are few such opportunities that open the big door for counseling and coaching. All the counseling done offline is now going online. But the problem is that the big fishes who did career counseling offline smartly went online quite early hence left little scope for startups with just an online venture. This presents start ups as limped minnows in front of big fishes as they add lesser value. As of now I feel career councelling and coaching in India needs more of an offline service supplemented by an online service if the intention is to be big.

Small gets bigger while big gets cheaper

If Tata Nano was an exception, engineers at Maruti have come up MPV Eeco , priced between 2.59 to 2.89 lakhs. With a 1200 cc engine, it can carve out a new segment in the small car category. Similar to OMNI, it certainly looks better and has a powerful engine. Auto industry has come up with very good value proposition for consumers. A multi purpose vehicle in that price range could find a huge market especially in rural India. Another interesting story is of Bruj Khalifa , the world's tallest building. A home in Bruj costs less than a similar one in a posh colony in Delhi. Woah! The bottom line is that to stay competitive, small has to get big and big needs to be cheaper.

What is Success ?

In my last post I said that to be successful, you need to take HOPE forward. So if you want to be a successful person/enterprise, give something in demand. You can only give something in demand when you have enough of it. By that I mean you have a hope that your dream will be fulfilled someday ,maybe today. The problem arises that as we grow up, we in our endeavor to be successful, get caught in the trappings of success and end up chasing them. I too have faced this dilemma many times.   Laurence J peter says, Impressing others has become such a preoccupation that the image and trappings of success are more valued than success itself. I feel True success lies in hope i.e. having more of it.

Idea behind the name

If you don't know, this blog was earlier called speak india. (url: speakindiablog.blogspot.com ). Now you would find it redirected towards where you(we) currently are i.e. ( domainofhope.com ). Yup the word is HOPE! As to why I renamed it, Seth Godin explains it in a better way. He says, "Fear mongering is a lousy profession, one that ought to be regulated, if not banned. I'm more in favor of hope mongering . 2010 is the year that the world will change. In fact, every year is that year, but this is the only time we'll get to change the world this time." Fear of failure, fear of fall or simply fear (terror) is something we are used to and I feel we've had an overdose of it. (Courtesy : Hysterical Media). Just to add to what Seth says, following the demand-supply relationship, I don't think there exists any demand for fear, rather there is an excessive supply. So if you want to be a successful person/enterprise, give something in demand. Fulfill a nee...

Creativity

Fake could be a synonym for Bollywood if oxford decides to renew its word list.Imagine on one hand they keep shouting, no piracy! no piracy! BS and then they arm twist a writer and not give him credit for a work they definitely copied (I agree the climax wasn't the same). But this time unfortunately for them, the writer is kind of popular, writes a blog and has good credibility. On one hand, no piracy, on the other, yes to copying without giving proper credit. It seems Bollywood and original can never go hand in hand. I don't know how much creativity really exists. As Einstein says, creativity is the art of hiding your sources, well if you can't hide as in this case, please give due credit. It is a cheap act when you are earning crores, not big hearted enough to give proper credit and then misbehave in press-conferences.

Best deal - Apnacashback

Ever wondered where you could get the best deal on the web, cheapest air fare or the best buy for an electronic item. It may not be ebay always. Apnacashback.com scouts for the best deals on web and gives you a cash back every time you purchase. The concept seems value adding and this form of online retailing can be successful in the long run if given proper visibility. One thing they need to improve is their website design. It is not so easy to decode and hence may be a cause for sending back their customers.

Voicetap - Startup

Getting an expert could be really easy on the web. You just Google what you are looking for. But, SEO, ads have really made it tough to find a person ready to give us a true bargain. Imagine getting an expert advice free of cost and that too on phone. Doesn't seem really feasible. Well, Voicetap has made it possible. It connects you to an expert. You can connect with them through G-talk, ask a problem and decide on ta mode of communication. The only problem is that it is a feedback based system so there is a high probability that you could be talking to a product/service seller rather than an expert. Their concept will work if it gets the right set of experts and expert seekers. They have experts on knowledge. Knowledge can be divided into explicit and tacit knowledge. There is no dearth of explicit knowledge on web. Its only tacit knowledge that needs a network and interaction. And I feel that there would be hardly any people who'd be really willing to give time for somethi...
